Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the full period you plan to stay in Kazakhstan. Airlines at Arlanda and Gardermoen check this before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Kazakhstan
Immigration officers at Almaty and Nur-Sultan airports ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host. Border officers rarely ask, but if they do, not having it can delay entry.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least 50,000 KZT per day of your stay. Officers at land borders are more likely to ask than at airports.Recommended
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly.
No visa needed for 30 days
Swedish passport holders can stay up to 30 days visa-free. No application, no fee. Just show up with a valid passport and a return ticket.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at the airport
At Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (NQZ) in Astana or Almaty International Airport (ALA), follow signs to 'Passport Control'. Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your passport validity and may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 30-day entry permit.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're free to enter Kazakhstan.
