Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Swedish passport only needs to be valid for the time you plan to stay in Moldova. Airlines may still ask for 6 months validity — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Moldova
Immigration officers at Chișinău Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officials can request proof you have enough money for your stay. A bank statement or credit card showing access to around €50 per day covers this.Recommended
Passport validity is strict
Moldovan border control enforces the 6-month passport validity rule strictly. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be turned away at the border — no exceptions.
Overstaying has consequences
Overstaying your 90-day visa-free period can result in fines, a ban from re-entering Moldova, or deportation. Keep track of your entry date and leave before it expires.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Chișinău International Airport
Most travellers fly into Chișinău (KIV). After landing, follow signs to 'Border Control' or 'Passport Control'. There are separate queues for EU/EEA and other nationals — join the EU/EEA line.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport to the border officer. They'll check the photo page, verify your validity, and may ask your purpose of visit and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the number of days you're allowed to stay (up to 90). Check the stamp before walking away — if it's wrong, ask for correction immediately.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items. Exit into the arrivals hall.

Frequently asked questions

No. Swedish citizens can enter Moldova visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.
No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a temporary residence permit from the Moldovan Bureau for Migration and Asylum before your 90 days expire. This requires a valid reason (e.g., work, study, family reunion) and supporting documents.
You'll be denied entry. Renew your passport before travelling. The 6-month validity is calculated from your entry date, not your departure date.
Immigration may ask for proof of onward travel. It's not always checked, but it's safer to have a return or onward ticket booked and a screenshot saved on your phone.
Not officially required for visa-free entry, but strongly recommended. Medical costs in Moldova can be high for foreigners, and insurance covers hospital stays, repatriation, and trip disruptions.
Overstaying is a violation of immigration law. You may face fines, a ban from re-entering Moldova, or deportation. The fine is typically around 200–400 MDL per day overstayed, but can be higher. Always leave before your 90 days are up.
Yes. There are several land border crossings from Romania (e.g., Sculeni, Leușeni, Giurgiulești) and from Ukraine (e.g., Palanca, Otaci). The same visa-free rules apply. Have your passport ready for inspection at the border.
