Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get a 30-day single-entry visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport. Pay $50 USD in cash (exact change recommended) — the ATM at the airport sometimes runs out. Have a printed hotel booking and return ticket ready, as the visa officer may ask to see them before issuing the stamp.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Original passport with at least 6 months validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Rwanda. Carry a photocopy of the bio page separately — immigration officers occasionally ask for it during the visa-on-arrival process.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration at Kigali Airport routinely checks for a confirmed onward or return ticket. A printed itinerary or e-ticket works — they rarely check the booking status online. If you're overlanding to Uganda or DRC, have a bus ticket or border crossing plan ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Rwanda. Immigration may ask for it during the visa-on-arrival interview, especially if you're staying more than a few days.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds for your stay. Immigration rarely asks, but the visa officer may request proof if you're staying longer than two weeks.Recommended
Cash only for visa fee
The visa-on-arrival fee must be paid in cash (USD or EUR). Cards are not accepted. Bring small bills — $20s and $10s — to avoid change issues.
Visa on arrival is the standard entry
You don't need to apply for an e-visa or visit an embassy beforehand. Just show up at Kigali airport or a land border with your passport and cash. This is the normal way Swedish travellers enter Rwanda.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kigali International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. There's a dedicated counter before the main passport control queue.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll be given a short form at the counter. Fill in your personal details, passport info, and accommodation address. A pen is provided.
3
Submit documents and pay the fee
Hand over your passport, completed form, and cash (USD or EUR). The officer will process your visa and affix the sticker. This usually takes 5–10 minutes.
4
Proceed to passport control
Once you have the visa sticker, go to the main passport control queue. Show your passport with the new visa and your boarding pass. You'll be stamped in.
