Health precautions
Yellow fever vaccination is required. Malaria is widespread — take prophylactic medication and use mosquito repellent. Carry a basic medical kit — pharmacies in Chad are poorly stocked.
Security situation
Chad has a high risk of terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest. Check your government's travel advisory before booking. Avoid travel to border regions, especially near Sudan, Libya, and the Lake Chad area. Register with your embassy on arrival.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the e-visa online
Go to the official Chadian e-visa portal at https://e-visa.td/ and fill out the application. You'll need to upload a digital passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the visa fee online — typically around €70–€100 depending on your nationality. Processing takes 5–10 business days, so apply at least 2 weeks before your trip.
2
Receive and print your visa
Once approved, you'll get a PDF visa by email. Print two copies — one to present at check-in and one for immigration on arrival. Keep a digital copy on your phone as backup.
3
Arrive at N'Djamena International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival' (even though you already have a visa). Present your passport, printed visa, return ticket, and accommodation proof. The officer will stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 15–30 minutes.
4
Get your luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. There's a customs check — declare any large amounts of cash or electronics. Then walk through the green channel if you have nothing to declare.

Frequently asked questions

No. There is no visa on arrival for Swedish citizens. You must apply for an e-visa online before you travel. The official portal is e-visa.td.
Processing usually takes 5–10 business days. Apply at least 2 weeks before your departure to be safe. The fee is around €70–€100, payable online by credit card.
You'll be denied entry. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you arrive in Chad. If it's close to expiring, renew it before applying for the visa.
Yes. Yellow fever vaccination is required for all travellers over 9 months old arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission. Sweden is not a risk country, but if you've recently travelled to a yellow fever endemic area, you'll need to show the certificate. Even if not required, it's strongly recommended — carry your WHO yellow card.
Not officially required for the visa application, but strongly recommended. Medical facilities in Chad are very basic, and evacuation to Europe can cost tens of thousands of euros. Get a policy that covers medical evacuation.
Extensions are not available for the standard e-visa. If you need to stay longer, you must leave the country and reapply for a new visa. Overstaying can result in fines or deportation.
The currency is the Central African CFA franc (XAF). ATMs are scarce in N'Djamena and almost non-existent elsewhere. Bring euros or US dollars in cash to exchange — you'll get a better rate than using a card. Credit cards are rarely accepted outside major hotels.
