Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Swedish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Ukraine. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Ukrainian law, but airlines may ask for at least 3 months remaining.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ukraine
Immigration officers at Kyiv Boryspil and Lviv airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound booking ready — they check this before letting you through.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number. Border officers occasionally ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $50 USD per day of your stay. Officers rarely ask for this, but it's a legal requirement under Ukrainian immigration rules.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Ukraine. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you will not be allowed to fly.
No visa needed, but registration may apply
You don't need a visa for stays up to 90 days. But if you stay longer than 30 days, you must register with the State Migration Service. Your hotel or host can usually handle this.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport or border crossing
At Kyiv Boryspil, Lviv, or any land border, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and you're done — usually under 2 minutes.
2
Fill out the arrival declaration (if required)
Ukraine does not require a standard arrival declaration for Swedish citizens. Just walk through after the passport check.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After the stamp, head to baggage claim (if flying) and then customs. Green channel if nothing to declare. You're free to enter.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 90 days within any 180-day period. Extensions are not available for tourist stays. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a temporary residence permit before your 90 days expire — contact the State Migration Service of Ukraine.
Yes, if you stay more than 30 days. Your hotel or host must register you with the State Migration Service within 30 days of arrival. If you're in private accommodation, you or your host must do it in person at the local migration office. Failure to register can result in fines.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before traveling. There are no exceptions for Swedish citizens.
Yes. Swedish citizens can enter Ukraine at any land border crossing with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, or Moldova. The same visa-free rules apply. Expect longer queues at busy crossings like Medyka-Shehyni (Poland) during peak times.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Ukraine can be high, and your Swedish EU health card is not valid there. A basic travel insurance policy covering medical expenses is cheap insurance against a big bill.
Your passport (valid 6+ months) and a return or onward ticket. That's it. Immigration rarely asks for accommodation proof or insurance, but having them ready avoids delays.
Yes, you can work remotely for a foreign employer without a visa. But you cannot take a job with a Ukrainian company or work for a Ukrainian employer without a work permit. The 90-day limit still applies.
