Bulgaria is now in Schengen
Since March 2024, Bulgaria is part of the Schengen area. This means your 90-day visa-free stay counts toward the Schengen 90/180-day rule. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries, check your remaining days.
Border checks still happen
Despite Schengen membership, Bulgaria may conduct random border checks at land borders with Romania and Greece. Always carry your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you travel, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at Bulgarian border
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the 'All Passports' queue. Present your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying.
3
Passport control
The officer will stamp your passport with your entry date. No visa is needed. The process usually takes 1-2 minutes. Keep your boarding pass and return ticket handy.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs. There's no customs declaration for personal items under €430.
