Slovenian passport holders can enter Hungary visa-free for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This has been the case since Hungary joined the Schengen Area, and it remains unchanged in 2026. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Hungary. Since Hungary is in the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — not per country. Airlines check this at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Budapest Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at passport control.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or host's address handy. Border officers at Budapest sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Hungary doesn't publish a fixed amount, but around 10,000 HUF (~€25) per day is a safe benchmark if asked.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Hungary, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel.
Schengen 90/180-day rule applies
Your 90-day allowance is shared across all Schengen countries. Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc., all count toward the same limit. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at passport control
At Budapest Airport (or any land border), join the queue for non-EU/non-Schengen passports. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask how long you're staying and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They might also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation confirmation.
3
Get your entry stamp
If everything's in order, you'll get an entry stamp in your passport. This stamp records your entry date and is important for tracking your 90-day allowance. Keep it safe.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then go through customs. There are no further immigration checks.
