Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the 30 days you plan to stay in Mongolia. Airlines at Ljubljana or connecting hubs may ask for 6 months validity — check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mongolia
Immigration officers at Chinggis Khaan International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Mongolia ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host in Mongolia. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your stay. There's no fixed minimum amount, but around $50 USD per day is a safe benchmark if questioned.Recommended
No visa needed — but be prepared
You don't need to apply for anything before travel. Just show up with a valid passport and a return ticket. Keep a digital copy of your accommodation and insurance handy.
Overstaying is costly
Overstaying even a day can result in a fine of around 50,000 MNT per day (about $15 USD) and a note in your record. Don't risk it — set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Ulaanbaatar (or other port of entry)

Join the 'Foreign Passports' line. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will stamp you in — no forms needed.
3
Show return ticket if asked
Immigration may request proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Mongolia.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim and customs. No arrival declaration is required for standard tourist visits.
