Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay in the Netherlands
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the Netherlands. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all 27 Schengen countries — not just the Netherlands.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Schiphol and other Schengen entry points routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing your departure from the Schengen zone within 90 days.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a signed invitation letter from your host in the Netherlands. Border officers rarely ask, but budget airlines sometimes check before boarding.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least €55 per day of your stay. Immigration rarely checks for Slovenian passport holders, but it's a legal requirement under Schengen rules.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
The Netherlands is part of the Schengen area. Your 90-day allowance applies to all 27 Schengen countries combined, not just the Netherlands. If you've already spent time in France or Germany earlier in the year, that counts toward your 90 days.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Schiphol Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Paspoortcontrole' (Passport Control). EU/EEA/Swiss citizens use separate lanes; as a Slovenian, you can use the EU lane. Have your passport ready. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, accommodation, and return date. Answer clearly. The process usually takes 1-2 minutes.
2
At the border officer's desk
Hand over your passport. If asked, state your purpose (tourism, business, etc.), how long you're staying, and where you're staying. You may be asked to show your return ticket or accommodation booking. Stay calm and polite.
3
Passport stamping
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp marks the start of your 90-day Schengen stay. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it for your exit check.
4
Exit the airport
After passport control, collect your luggage and proceed through customs (green channel for most travellers). You're now in the Schengen area.

Frequently asked questions

No. Slovenian passport holders do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days for tourism, business, or family visits. This applies to the entire Schengen area.
You cannot extend a tourist stay beyond 90 days. For longer stays (work, study, family reunification), you need a national visa or residence permit. Apply at the Dutch embassy in Ljubljana before you travel.
No. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel.
It's rare, but possible. Carry a credit card and some cash (€50-100). If asked, a bank statement or credit card limit is usually enough. The guideline is about €55 per day.
Yes, you need proof that you'll leave the Schengen area within 90 days. A flight to a non-Schengen country works. A bus or train ticket to another Schengen country does not count as leaving the area.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from re-entering the Schengen area, or both. The Dutch immigration authorities take it seriously. If you need to stay longer, apply for an extension before your 90 days expire.
