Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Panama. Airlines at check-in may ask for at least 6 months validity beyond your departure date, but Panama's immigration law only requires validity covering your stay.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Panama
Immigration officers at Tocumen International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight booking ready — they check this even if you arrived visa-free.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host handy. Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you're arriving without a return ticket.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have access to at least $500 USD or equivalent in cash, credit card, or bank statement. Immigration may ask to see this if you look like you're planning to work or overstay.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Panama. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied travel. Renew your passport well in advance.
Keep a digital copy of your documents
Save screenshots of your passport info page, return ticket, and hotel booking on your phone. Also email copies to yourself. If your phone dies or gets lost, you can access them from any device.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Make sure your passport has 6+ months validity and at least one blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of your flight booking and hotel confirmation on your phone. Consider getting travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at Tocumen International Airport (PTY)
Most flights land at Panama City's Tocumen Airport. Follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are separate queues for nationals and foreigners — join the 'Extranjeros' line. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
3
Present your passport to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask how long you're staying and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or hotel booking. If asked, show the screenshots on your phone. The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry.
4
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. You'll pass through customs — there's a red/green channel system. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Occasionally bags are scanned randomly.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 90-day visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Panama before day 90 and re-enter. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
Yes, any onward ticket out of Panama works — it doesn't have to be a return to Slovenia. A flight to Costa Rica, Colombia, or anywhere else is fine. Immigration just wants proof you're leaving within 90 days.
You will likely be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry at Tocumen Airport. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced.
No, it's not mandatory for visa-free entry. However, it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Panama can be high — a simple hospital visit can cost hundreds of dollars. Insurance is cheap and covers emergencies.
Yes, you can enter by land from Costa Rica at the Paso Canoas crossing. There is no land border with Colombia due to the Darién Gap — you must fly or take a boat. The same visa-free rules apply at land borders.
No, there is no online arrival declaration required for Slovenian passport holders. You simply show your passport at immigration and receive a stamp. No forms to fill in advance.
Panama uses the US dollar (USD) as its official currency, though locally it's called the Panamanian balboa (PAB) at 1:1. US dollars are accepted everywhere. Bring some cash for taxis and small shops — cards work in most hotels and restaurants in Panama City.
