Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in El Salvador. Immigration officers at San Salvador airport check this at the counter — they won't let you through if it expires before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from El Salvador
Immigration at Comalapa International Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they won't accept a verbal promise.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend with their address is enough — just have it accessible on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Border officers can request evidence of financial means — a bank statement or credit card showing available funds works. No fixed amount is published, but having $500–$1,000 available covers most situations.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity at check-in. If you have less than 6 months left, you won't be allowed to board. Double-check your expiry date before booking.
Keep a digital copy of your documents
Save photos of your passport, return ticket, and hotel booking on your phone and in cloud storage. If your passport is lost or stolen, this makes replacement much faster.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at San Salvador International Airport (SAL)
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are separate lines for Salvadoran citizens and foreigners. Join the 'Extranjeros' line. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport with a 180-day entry. The process usually takes 5–15 minutes.
2
Land border crossings
If entering by land from Guatemala or Honduras, you'll go through a small immigration booth. Same requirements apply: passport with 6 months validity, return ticket proof. Cash is useful for any small fees (though entry itself is free). Expect a short wait.
