Slovenian passport holders can enter Ukraine without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This visa-free policy has been in effect since 2017 and applies to tourism, business, and family visits. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Ukraine. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required, but airlines sometimes enforce 3 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ukraine
Immigration officers at Boryspil and Lviv airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they may also check that your onward flight is within the 90-day visa-free window.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a notarized invitation letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, not having one can mean extra questioning or denial of entry.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least $50 USD per day of your stay. Officers almost never check this for Slovenian passport holders, but it's a legal requirement under Ukrainian immigration rules.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding even if Ukraine would let you in.
Travel insurance is strongly recommended
While not mandatory for visa-free entry, medical costs in Ukraine can be high. A basic travel insurance policy (around €10–€20 for a week) covers emergencies, hospital stays, and repatriation. Don't skip it.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before travel
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Download or print confirmations. Consider getting travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at Ukrainian border (air or land)
At any international airport (Kyiv Boryspil, Lviv, Odesa) or land border crossing, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and any supporting documents ready.
3
Present passport to border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your validity, may ask about your stay duration and purpose. Answer briefly and honestly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
4
Receive entry stamp and proceed
Once stamped, you're in. The stamp shows your entry date and the maximum stay (90 days). Keep the stamp legible — it's your proof of legal entry.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 90 days within any 180-day period. Extensions are not available for visa-free visitors. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a temporary residence permit before your 90 days expire — this requires a valid reason (work, study, family reunion) and is processed by the State Migration Service.
Overstaying is a violation of Ukrainian immigration law. You may face a fine (around 1,700–8,500 UAH, roughly €40–€200), deportation, and a ban on re-entry for up to 3 years. The exact penalty depends on how long you overstay and the officer's discretion.
No. If you're transiting through a Ukrainian airport and staying in the international transit zone, you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport or stay overnight, the standard visa-free rules apply (90 days).
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, family visits, and short-term cultural events. If you want to work or study, you must apply for the appropriate visa or residence permit before you travel.
At minimum: your valid passport. It's smart to also have a printed or digital copy of your return ticket, first night accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Border officers rarely ask for more than your passport, but having extras ready avoids delays.
For stays under 90 days, no registration is needed. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a residence permit), you must register your place of residence with the State Migration Service within 30 days of arrival.
The official currency is the Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH). ATMs are widely available in cities. Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops. It's a good idea to carry some cash for smaller vendors and rural areas.
