As a Slovak passport holder, you can enter Bulgaria without a visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This has been the case since Bulgaria joined the EU, and it applies for tourism, business, or visiting family. Just make sure your passport meets the validity requirements before you travel.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Bulgaria. Bulgaria does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but some airlines may still enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport and land borders routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave Bulgaria within your visa-free period.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from a host ready. A printed copy avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
You may need to show you have enough cash or credit for your trip. There is no fixed amount, but having around 50 EUR per day in cash or a card with available credit covers the requirement.Recommended
Bulgaria is not yet in Schengen
Even though Bulgaria is an EU member, it's not part of the Schengen Area. This means you'll still go through passport control when flying from other EU countries. Your 90-day limit counts separately from Schengen days — but the 90/180 rule still applies.
Overstaying can be costly
If you stay longer than 90 days without a permit, you risk a fine of up to 500 BGN (around €250) and a re-entry ban. Don't push the limit.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Bulgarian border control
At Sofia Airport, Varna, or any land border, join the queue for 'All Passports' or 'EU/EEA' lanes. Have your passport and any supporting documents ready.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport. The officer will check the photo, validity, and may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying.
3
Answer questions clearly
Be ready to say: 'Tourism' (or business/visiting family), '5 days' (or however long), and name your hotel or host. Keep it simple and honest.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. That stamp is your proof of legal entry.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim (if flying) then customs. Green channel for nothing to declare, red if you have goods over the duty-free limit.

Frequently asked questions

No, you don't. Slovakia and Bulgaria are both EU member states, so you can enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, business, or visiting family.
Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen-area rule, even though Bulgaria is not yet fully in Schengen. If you overstay, you risk fines or a re-entry ban.
No, not as a tourist. The 90-day limit is strict. If you need to stay longer (e.g., for work or study), you must apply for a long-stay visa or residence permit from the Bulgarian embassy before you travel.
You'll likely be denied boarding or entry. The 6-month validity rule is enforced. Renew your passport before you travel.
Not always, but immigration officers can ask for proof of onward travel. It's safest to have a return or onward ticket booked and a screenshot saved on your phone.
No, it's not a legal requirement for entry. But it's strongly recommended — medical costs in Bulgaria can be high, and your Slovak health insurance may not cover you fully abroad.
The official currency is the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Many tourist places accept euros, but you'll get a poor exchange rate. Best to withdraw leva from ATMs or exchange at a bank.
