Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Guatemala. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Guatemala
Immigration officers routinely ask for a flight out of Guatemala within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy of your onward ticket ready — they won't let you through without one.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but when they do, they expect to see an address and contact number.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready. Immigration may ask how you'll fund your trip — a recent statement showing a few hundred dollars is usually enough.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Guatemala requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly. Renew early if needed.
Keep a copy of your return ticket
Immigration officers at La Aurora Airport often ask to see proof of onward travel. A screenshot on your phone is fine, but a printed copy is even safer in case your battery dies.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Guatemala City Airport (La Aurora)
You'll land at La Aurora International Airport (GUA). Follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are separate queues for Guatemalan citizens and foreigners — join the foreigners line.
2
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport and any requested documents (return ticket, accommodation). The officer will check your passport validity and may ask a few questions (purpose of visit, length of stay). Answer calmly and truthfully.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the number of days granted (usually 90). Check the stamp before leaving the counter. If the number of days is wrong, ask for correction immediately.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, head to baggage claim. Then go through customs — you may be asked to put bags through an X-ray or have them inspected. Declare any items over the duty-free limit.

Not if you're arriving directly from Europe or the US. But if you've recently been in a country with yellow fever (e.g., Brazil, parts of Africa), you may need proof of vaccination. Check the latest requirements before travel.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Guatemalan immigration. Get a new passport before you travel. A damaged passport (torn pages, water damage) can also be rejected.
