Slovak passport holders can enter Hungary without a visa for short stays. As a fellow EU/Schengen country, you can travel freely and stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This has been the case since Hungary joined the Schengen Area in 2007.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Hungary. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all 27 Schengen countries — not just Hungary. Airlines at check-in will verify your passport validity.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country works. Budget airlines sometimes check this at boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a host's address ready. Officers at passport control occasionally ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to roughly €100 per day of your stay. In practice, officers rarely ask for this unless you look like you might overstay or work illegally.Recommended
Schengen zone rules apply
Your 90-day allowance is for the entire Schengen Area, not just Hungary. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries earlier in the 180-day window, that counts toward your limit. Use the Schengen calculator online to track your days.
No border checks at most crossings
Since both countries are in Schengen, you can cross the border by road, rail, or air with minimal or no passport checks. Random police checks do happen, so always carry your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Budapest Airport or land border
At Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, follow signs to 'EU/Schengen' passport control. Since you're a Slovak citizen, you'll use the EU lane. Have your passport ready. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and length of stay. Answer briefly and honestly. At land borders from Austria, Slovenia, or other Schengen countries, there are usually no routine checks, but random spot checks happen.
2
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: 'How long are you staying?' or 'What's the purpose of your visit?' Keep answers short — tourism, business meeting, visiting friends. If asked for proof of funds or return ticket, show the documents you prepared. The whole process usually takes under a minute.
3
Receive entry stamp (if requested)
For EU citizens, entry stamps are not mandatory but you can ask for one if you want a record. The officer will scan your passport and wave you through. Collect your passport and proceed to baggage claim.
