Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Slovak passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Mexico. Mexico does not require 6 months of remaining validity beyond your departure date, but airlines sometimes enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mexico
Immigration officers at Mexico City, Cancún, and other airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket before letting you through. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Mexico ready — a bus ticket to Belize or Guatemala also works if you're leaving by land.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a return ticket. A printed hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend in Mexico with their address is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers rarely ask for this for Slovak passport holders, but having a bank statement or credit card showing access to around 500 USD per month of your stay avoids any hassle.Recommended
Keep your FMM form safe
When you enter Mexico, you'll receive a stamped immigration form (FMM). Don't lose it — you must hand it back when you leave. Losing it means extra paperwork and a fine at the airport.
Overstaying is costly
The 180-day stay is not extendable. Overstaying even a day can trigger fines and future entry bans. Set a calendar reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity from your entry date. Print or save digital copies of your return ticket, first night hotel booking, and travel insurance. Download an eSIM if you plan to use one.
2
Fill out the immigration form (if required)
You may be asked to complete a Mexican immigration form (FMM) on the plane or at the airport. Keep the tear-off portion — you'll need to return it when you leave Mexico.
3
Go through immigration at the airport
At Mexico City, Cancún, or other international airports, join the foreign passport queue. Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will stamp your passport with the number of days granted (usually 180).
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You may be asked to press a button for a random luggage check. If green, you're free to go.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Mexico before the 180 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban from re-entry.
You'll be denied entry. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced.
Yes, an onward ticket to any country outside Mexico works. It just proves you'll leave before your stay ends.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But it's strongly recommended — medical costs in Mexico can be very high, and insurance covers emergencies, cancellations, and lost luggage.
Technically, the tourist visa does not permit paid work for a Mexican employer. Remote work for a foreign company is generally tolerated, but the rules are unclear. For long-term remote work, consider Mexico's temporary resident visa.
You'll face a fine when leaving (around 500–1000 MXN per month overstayed) and may be banned from re-entering Mexico for a period. Always leave on time.
No mandatory vaccinations for Slovak passport holders. Routine vaccines (MMR, tetanus) are recommended. Hepatitis A and typhoid are suggested if you're eating street food or visiting rural areas.
