Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements, a credit card, or cash showing you have at least €50 per day for your stay. Officers rarely ask, but they can refuse entry if you can't prove sufficient funds.Recommended
Apply well in advance
Visa processing can take 15 days or longer, especially during peak travel seasons. Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your planned departure to avoid last-minute stress.
Schengen area rules apply
A Latvian visa lets you travel to all 27 Schengen countries (France, Germany, Spain, etc.) for up to 90 days. But your first point of entry must be Latvia, or Latvia must be your main destination (longest stay).

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Latvian embassy
Contact the Latvian embassy or consulate in your region (e.g., in Dakar if you're in Senegal). Submit the completed application form, passport, photos, travel insurance, flight and accommodation bookings, and proof of funds. Pay the visa fee (€80 for adults, €40 for children 6–12, free for under-6s). Processing takes 15 calendar days on average, but can take longer — apply at least 4 weeks before your trip.
2
Wait for visa approval and collect your passport
Once processed, you'll be notified to pick up your passport with the visa sticker. Check the validity dates and your name spelling immediately. If anything is wrong, ask for a correction before you travel.
3
Arrive at Riga Airport (RIX) and go through border control
At Riga International Airport, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport, visa, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and how long you're staying. Answer clearly. You'll get an entry stamp — that's your permission to stay up to 90 days in the Schengen area.

Frequently asked questions

If you're staying airside and don't enter the Schengen area, you may not need a visa for transit. But if you need to go through passport control (e.g., to switch airports or terminals), you'll need a Schengen visa. Check with your airline before booking.
Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The visa will show the exact validity dates. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban from Schengen countries.
Generally no. Schengen short-stay visas are not extendable for tourism. If you have an emergency (e.g., medical), contact the Latvian Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) in Riga.
You'll receive a written reason. You can appeal within 30 days to the Latvian embassy that rejected your application. Common reasons: insufficient funds, unclear travel purpose, or weak ties to your home country.
Immigration officers can ask. The general guideline is €50–€100 per day of your stay. A bank statement or credit card with sufficient limit is usually accepted.
Yes. If you hold a valid residence permit from any Schengen state, you can travel to Latvia without a separate visa for stays up to 90 days. Just carry your passport and residence card.
No mandatory vaccinations for entry. Routine vaccines (MMR, DTP) are recommended. No yellow fever certificate required unless you're arriving from an endemic area — Senegal is not considered endemic, so you're fine.
