Apply before departure
You need an eVisa to enter Tanzania. Apply at the official Tanzania eVisa portal at least 2 weeks before travel — processing can take up to 10 working days. The eVisa costs $50 USD for a single-entry tourist visa and is valid for 90 days from issue.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Tanzania. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Julius Nyerere and Kilimanjaro airports always ask for a return or onward ticket. If you don't have one, they'll send you to buy one at the airline counter before clearing immigration.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a printed hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Immigration officers ask for this about half the time — if you can't show one, they'll question your itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers may ask how you'll fund your stay. Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least $200 USD per day of your trip. I've seen them count cash at the counter.Recommended
Yellow fever vaccination required
If you're arriving from Senegal or any country with yellow fever, you must show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate (yellow card) at immigration. Without it, you may be denied entry or forced to get vaccinated at the airport.
eVisa processing times vary
Apply at least 2 weeks before your trip. Processing can take up to 10 working days, and there's no expedited option. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have the approval.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa online
Go to visa.immigration.go.tz, fill in the application form, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page, and pay the fee (around $50 USD for a single-entry tourist visa). Processing takes 3–10 working days.
2
Receive eVisa approval
You'll get an email with a PDF approval letter. Print it and keep a digital copy on your phone. The eVisa is valid for 90 days from issue and allows a single entry.
3
Arrive at Tanzanian airport
At Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam) or Kilimanjaro International Airport, proceed to immigration. Have your passport, eVisa approval, return ticket, and accommodation booking ready. The officer will stamp your passport.
4

After immigration, collect your bags and pass through customs. If you have an eSIM, it should activate automatically as soon as you connect to the local network.
