Yellow fever vaccine is mandatory
You must show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate (yellow card) at immigration. Without it, you could be denied entry or forced to get vaccinated on the spot at your own expense. Get the shot at least 10 days before travel.
Cash is king in Benin
ATMs are limited outside Cotonou, and credit cards aren't widely accepted. Bring enough CFA francs (XOF) for your stay. You can exchange US dollars or euros at banks and exchange bureaus in the city.

Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Benin eVisa portal (evisa.gouv.bj/en). Fill in your personal details, passport info, travel dates, and upload a digital passport photo. Pay the fee with a credit or debit card. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days.

Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get a PDF by email. Print at least one copy to carry with your passport. Also save a digital copy on your phone as backup.

Arrive at Cotonou Cadjehoun Airport (COO)
Most travellers fly into Cotonou. After landing, follow signs to immigration. Have your passport, printed eVisa, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will stamp you in — the whole process usually takes 10–20 minutes.

Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. There's a customs check (usually quick). Then you're free to leave the arrivals hall.
