Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the full 30 days you plan to stay in Hong Kong. Hong Kong immigration does not enforce a strict 6-month validity rule, but your airline at check-in might ask for it — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Hong Kong
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket at the counter. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they want to see you leave within the 30-day visa-free period.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Hong Kong. Immigration rarely asks for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have access to at least 20,000 THB (or equivalent in HKD or USD) per person. Immigration may ask for bank statements or cash on hand — keep a screenshot of your mobile banking app or carry some cash.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Hong Kong immigration requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry on arrival. Renew your passport well before your trip.
No visa extension available
The 30-day visa-free period cannot be extended for any reason. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a visa before you travel. Overstaying can lead to fines, imprisonment, and a ban from re-entering Hong Kong.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone. Consider getting travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Fill out the arrival card (if required)
Hong Kong no longer requires paper arrival cards for most visitors. You'll simply proceed to immigration after landing.
3
Queue at immigration
At Hong Kong International Airport, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then to 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Hong Kong residents and visitors. Join the visitors queue.
4
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask about the purpose of your visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation booking.
5
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay period (usually 30 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter.
6
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, collect your checked luggage from the carousel, then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no restricted items.
