Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply for an Irish visa
You need a visa before you fly. Apply online at the Irish Immigration Service portal — the link is below. Processing takes 2–8 weeks depending on your home country and the time of year.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Ireland. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required, but airlines may ask for 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ireland
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. If you're continuing to another country, show that itinerary.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host with their address and contact number. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. There's no fixed minimum, but around €50–€70 per day is a safe benchmark. Officers may ask to see it.Recommended
Apply early — processing takes months
Irish visa processing can take 8-12 weeks. Don't book non-refundable flights or accommodation until your visa is approved.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save scans of your passport, visa, return ticket, and accommodation on your phone and email. If you lose your passport, these make replacement much faster.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the visa online
Go to the Irish visa website and fill out the online application form. You'll need to create an account, answer questions about your trip, and upload supporting documents.
2
Book an appointment
After submitting the online form, you'll be directed to book an appointment at a visa application centre (VAC) in Thailand. These are usually in Bangkok. You'll submit your passport and biometrics (photo and fingerprints) in person.
3
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 8-12 weeks. Apply well in advance of your travel date. You can track your application online.
4
Collect your passport
Once approved, your passport with the visa sticker will be returned to you via the VAC. Check the visa validity dates carefully.
5
Arrive in Ireland
At Dublin Airport or other ports of entry, join the 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. The immigration officer may ask about your plans.
