Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Laos. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Laos
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket out of Laos within 30 days. If you arrive without one, they may deny entry or require you to buy a ticket on the spot at the airport.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed or digital hotel reservation for at least your first few nights. Immigration rarely asks, but if they do and you have nothing, they may question your itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can ask for evidence of at least 20,000 THB or equivalent in cash, bank statement, or credit card. In practice, they rarely check for visa-free Thai passport holders, but having a bank statement ready avoids problems.Recommended
No visa needed, but be prepared
While entry is straightforward, immigration may still ask for proof of onward travel or accommodation. Have screenshots ready on your phone to avoid delays.
Overstaying costs money
If you stay past 30 days, you will be fined about $10 per day. Pay at immigration before leaving. Overstays can also get you blacklisted if excessive.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the border or airport
At Wattay International Airport in Vientiane or any land border crossing, head to the immigration counter. For visa-free entry, hand over your passport. No forms to fill, no fee to pay.
2
Get your passport stamped
The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and grant a 30-day stay. This takes about 2-5 minutes. Keep the departure slip if given one.
3
Collect your bags and exit
After immigration, grab your luggage and walk through customs. There is usually no baggage check unless you are carrying something suspicious. You are free to enter Laos.
