Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the full 90 days you plan to stay in Panama. Airlines at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang may still enforce the old 6-month rule — if your passport expires sooner, carry a printed copy of Panama's official policy from the migration service website.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Panama
Immigration officers at Tocumen International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket within 90 days. Budget airlines like Copa and Wingo check this at check-in too — have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask for your first night's hotel reservation or a letter from your host. A simple Booking.com confirmation or Airbnb receipt works — keep it on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Panama doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but carrying at least $500 USD in cash or a credit card with a visible limit covers you. ATMs at Tocuman give USD, so you don't need to arrive with stacks of cash.Recommended
Passport validity counts from arrival day
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Panama, not from your departure date. Double-check before booking flights.
No extension available
The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you need more time, you must leave Panama and re-enter after a short absence. Overstaying carries fines.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before travel
Gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, and first night's accommodation confirmation. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at Tocumen International Airport (PTY) or other entry point
Most visitors fly into Panama City's Tocumen Airport. Follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). The queue can be 20–60 minutes depending on flight arrivals.
3
Present your passport and supporting documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying.
4
Receive entry stamp and proceed
If approved, you'll get a stamp in your passport valid for up to 90 days. Check the stamp says the correct date. Then collect your luggage and exit customs.
