What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kigali International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. The queue is usually separate from visa-free passengers. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll get a short form at the counter. It asks for basic info: name, passport number, flight details, and where you're staying. Fill it in while queuing to save time.
3
Pay the visa fee
Hand over your form, passport, and fee. Single entry costs $30 USD, multiple entry $50. Pay in cash (USD) or by credit/debit card. Keep the receipt.
4
Wait for visa processing
The officer will check your documents, take a photo, and print the visa sticker. This usually takes 10–15 minutes. You'll get your passport back with the visa affixed.
5
Proceed to passport control
With the visa in your passport, go to the passport control counter. The officer will stamp you in. You're now legally in Rwanda.

Frequently asked questions

The visa on arrival is typically valid for 30 days. You can extend it once for another 30 days at the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration in Kigali. The extension costs about $50 USD.
Yes, but only at certain border posts. The most reliable are the land borders with Uganda (Gatuna/Katuna) and Tanzania (Rusumo). The process is the same as at the airport — same fee and requirements.
You'll likely be denied the visa on arrival. Immigration requires proof of onward travel. If you're overlanding, a bus ticket or a letter from a tour operator showing your exit plan may work.
No. The visa on arrival fee is charged in USD. You can pay with a credit or debit card, but cards sometimes fail. Bring $30–$50 in crisp USD bills just in case.
Yes, if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Thailand is not a risk country, but if you've traveled through Africa or South America before entering Rwanda, you'll need the vaccine certificate. The certificate is checked at immigration.
Yes, you can apply online through the Rwanda e-visa portal (https://irembo.gov.rw). The e-visa costs the same ($30 single entry) and takes 2–3 business days to process. It's a good backup if you want to skip the queue.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined $30 USD per day overstayed, and you may be banned from re-entering Rwanda for up to 6 months. Extend your visa before it expires if you need more time.
