Visa on arrival
Apply at the airport
You get a visa on arrival at Julius Nyerere (DAR), Kilimanjaro (JRO), and Abeid Amani Karume (ZNZ) airports. Pay $50 USD in cash (exact change) — they don't accept cards or other currencies. Have your passport photo and return ticket ready at the counter.Check visa detailsRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your Thai passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your entry date into Tanzania. Airlines at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang check this strictly before letting you board.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Tanzanian airports ask for proof of onward travel before stamping you in. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a bus/train ticket out of Tanzania.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Officers rarely ask for hotel bookings, but having a printed reservation for your first few nights helps if they question your itinerary. A hostel or Airbnb confirmation works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
You don't need to show bank statements unless you look like you're staying long-term. Carrying $200–$300 USD in cash covers the visa fee and a few days of expenses.Recommended
Cash only for visa fee
The visa on arrival fee must be paid in USD cash. ATMs at the airport may not dispense USD, and card payments are not accepted. Bring crisp, undamaged $50 bills — torn or marked notes may be refused.
Visa is not extendable
The visa on arrival is single entry and cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer than the allowed period, you must leave and re-enter, or apply for a different visa type before your trip.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the visa-on-arrival counter
At Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), or any other international entry point, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' after passport control. Join the queue — it can take 15–45 minutes depending on flight volume.
2
Present your documents and pay the fee
Hand over your passport, completed arrival form (if provided on the plane), return ticket, and accommodation proof. Pay the $50 USD (single entry) in cash. The officer will process and issue a visa sticker.
3
Proceed to passport control
With the visa sticker in your passport, go to the immigration officer's booth. They'll stamp you in. Keep your passport handy — you'll need it again when leaving.

Frequently asked questions

Single entry is $50 USD. Multiple entry is $100 USD. Cash only — no cards. Bring crisp, undamaged bills. ATMs at the airport may not dispense USD.
No. The visa on arrival is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave and re-enter, or apply for a different visa type before travel.
If you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, you'll need a valid yellow fever certificate. Thailand is not a yellow fever country, so you won't need it if you're flying directly from Thailand. But if you've been in a risk country within 6 days before arrival, you must show the certificate.
You will be denied entry. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
Yes, at major land border crossings like Namanga (from Kenya) and Sirari (from Kenya). The same $50 USD fee applies. Have your documents ready — queues can be slower than at airports.
No online pre-registration is required. You'll fill out a simple arrival form on the plane or at the visa counter. No e-visa system is in place for Thai passport holders.
Overstay is taken seriously. You'll be fined $50 USD per day overstayed, and may face a ban or deportation. Leave before your visa expires.
