Tunisian passport holders need a visa to enter Bulgaria in 2026. Apply at the Bulgarian embassy in Tunis before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa option for Tunisian nationals.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Schengen visa (type C)
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in Tunisia. Submit the application at least 15 days before travel — processing takes up to 15 calendar days. The visa allows up to 90 days within any 180-day period across all Schengen countries.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from Bulgaria
Your Tunisian passport needs at least two blank pages for entry stamps. Border officers check the 3-month validity rule strictly — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for Schengen entry
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to a non-Schengen country ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a confirmed hotel reservation for every night of your stay, or a notarized invitation letter from a Bulgarian host. Officers at passport control may ask to see it.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Show you have at least €50 per day of your stay — bank statements from the last 3 months or cash in euros work. Immigration rarely asks, but airlines sometimes check before boarding.Recommended
No visa-on-arrival or e-visa
Tunisian passport holders cannot get a visa at the airport or online. You must apply at the Bulgarian embassy in Tunis before you travel. Plan ahead — processing takes 2–3 weeks.
Bulgaria uses the Schengen visa rules
Even though Bulgaria is not yet in the Schengen Area, it follows Schengen visa rules. If you have a valid Schengen visa (from any Schengen country), you can enter Bulgaria without a separate Bulgarian visa — as long as your Schengen visa is valid for the whole stay.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the visa at the Bulgarian embassy in Tunis
Book an appointment at the Embassy of Bulgaria in Tunis. Submit your application, passport, photos, flight and hotel bookings, insurance, and bank statements. Pay the visa fee (around €80 for adults). Processing takes 10–15 working days.
2
Collect your passport with the visa sticker
Once approved, collect your passport from the embassy. Check the visa sticker — make sure your name, dates, and number of entries are correct.
3
Arrive at a Bulgarian airport or land border
When you land at Sofia Airport or any other entry point, go to the 'All Passports' queue. Hand over your passport with the visa. The officer may ask to see your return ticket and hotel booking. Answer clearly — they're checking you match the visa details.
4
Get your passport stamped
The officer will stamp your passport with your entry date and the number of days you're allowed to stay (usually the same as your visa validity). Keep the stamp safe — you'll need it when you leave.
