Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Mauritius. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mauritius
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Without one, you risk being denied entry and sent back on the next flight.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation, guesthouse booking, or a letter from your host ready. Officers sometimes ask for it at passport control.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Carry cash, a credit card, or bank statements showing you can cover your expenses. Immigration may ask for proof you have enough funds for accommodation and daily costs.Recommended
No visa needed — but don't skip the checklist
Visa-free doesn't mean 'no documents'. Immigration can and does ask for return tickets, accommodation proof, and funds. Have them ready on your phone or printed.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check this before you board. If your passport expires within 6 months of your arrival date, you will be denied boarding — no exceptions. Renew before you book.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration'. There are two queues: one for Mauritian citizens/residents, one for foreign visitors. Join the visitor queue.
2
Present your documents at the immigration counter
Hand over your passport and return ticket (printed or on phone). The officer may ask your purpose of visit, where you're staying, and how long you plan to stay. Answer clearly.
3
Get your passport stamped
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the number of days allowed (usually 90). Check the stamp before walking away — confirm the dates are correct.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually a green channel for most tourists. If you have nothing to declare, walk straight through.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Mauritius and re-enter, or apply for a longer-term visa (like a Premium Visa) before you travel. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
No. If you're connecting to another flight and don't leave the airport transit area, you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need to meet the visa-free entry requirements.
You will likely be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry by Mauritian immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. There are no exceptions for short stays.
No. There is no online arrival declaration for Mauritius. You'll fill out a paper landing card on the plane or at the airport. It's quick — just basic personal and flight info.
Technically, no — tourist status doesn't allow work. But Mauritius has a 'Premium Visa' for remote workers (valid 1 year, extendable). You must apply before you arrive. If you're just checking emails for a few days, it's usually ignored, but officially you need the Premium Visa.
Mauritian Rupee (MUR). ATMs are widely available at the airport and in towns. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and larger restaurants. Bring some cash for taxis and small shops. Exchange desks at the airport give fair rates.
No mandatory vaccines for Turkish travellers. But if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever, you'll need a yellow fever vaccine certificate. Check your itinerary — if you've been in Africa or South America recently, bring the certificate.
