Malawi customs rules & duty-free allowances
Malawi allows duty-free imports of 1 litre of spirits (or 2 litres of wine/beer), 200 cigarettes (or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco), and personal goods up to USD 800. Cash over USD 10,000 must be declared. Narcotics, counterfeit currency, and firearms without a permit are prohibited.

- Counterfeit currency and forged documents
- Firearms and ammunition without a permit from the Malawi Police
- Pornographic materials
- Radioactive materials and toxic waste
- Endangered species and products (e.g., ivory, rhino horn) without CITES permit
Restricted — allowed with a permit or declaration
- Medicines for personal use (prescription required for controlled drugs; limit 3 months' supply)
- Plants, seeds, and agricultural products (require phytosanitary certificate)
- Pets (dogs, cats) require a valid rabies vaccination certificate and import permit from the Department of Animal Health
- Satellite phones and radio transmitters (require a licence from the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority)
- Drones (require prior approval from the Malawi Civil Aviation Authority)
Rules worth knowing
Currency declaration
All cash amounts exceeding USD 10,000 or equivalent must be declared. Non-residents may re-export up to the amount declared on arrival.
Tobacco and alcohol age limit
You must be 18 years or older to import duty-free alcohol and tobacco. Minors cannot claim these allowances.
Used personal effects
Used personal effects (clothing, toiletries, cameras, laptops) are generally duty-free if they are for personal use and not for resale. Customs officers may ask for proof of ownership.
Gifts and samples
Commercial samples and gifts valued over USD 800 are subject to duty. Travellers bringing samples for business should have a proforma invoice ready.
