Mali customs rules & duty-free allowances

Mali's duty-free allowance for arriving non-resident adults is 1 liter of alcohol (spirits over 22% ABV) or 2 liters of wine/beer, and 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco. Cash amounts equivalent to USD 10,000 or more must be declared. Narcotics, counterfeit goods, weapons without permit, endangered species products, radioactive materials, and pornographic materials are strictly prohibited. Restricted items include medicines with prescription, plants with phytosanitary certificate, drones with prior authorization, firearms with permit, and cultural artifacts with export certificate.

Rules worth knowing

Currency declaration

All travellers entering or leaving Mali must declare any amount of cash, traveler's checks, or negotiable instruments equivalent to USD 10,000 or more (in XOF or any foreign currency) on the customs declaration form. Failure to declare can result in seizure and fines.

Gold and precious metals

Import of gold, silver, and precious stones for commercial purposes requires a permit from the Ministry of Mines. Personal jewelry is allowed but may be subject to scrutiny if in large quantities.

Temporary import of vehicles

Non-residents may temporarily import a vehicle for up to 3 months without paying duties, provided they have a valid international driving permit and vehicle registration. A carnet de passage en douane is recommended for overland travel.
