Rules worth knowing
Duty-free allowance is in local currency
Tonga sets its duty-free threshold at TOP 400 (approx. USD 170). Customs officers may convert to USD at the official exchange rate. Keep receipts for high-value items.
Tobacco and alcohol age limit
You must be at least 18 years old to bring in duty-free alcohol or tobacco. Minors cannot claim these allowances.
Biosecurity is strict
All food, plant material, and wooden items must be declared. Failure to declare can result in on-the-spot fines of up to TOP 1,000 (approx. USD 425).
Gifts and personal effects
Gifts valued over TOP 400 are subject to duty. Personal effects (clothing, toiletries) are generally duty-free if for personal use and not for resale.
