Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from Bulgaria. As a Schengen associate country, Bulgaria enforces this strictly at the border — airlines check it too.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check the date matches your 90-day visa-free limit.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Border officers occasionally ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry at least €50 per day of your stay in cash or a card with available credit. Immigration may ask to see bank statements or cash on hand — I've seen them do it at Sofia.Recommended
90-day limit applies to all Schengen countries
Your 90-day visa-free stay in Bulgaria counts toward the 90/180-day rule for the entire Schengen area. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries (e.g., France, Germany), that time reduces your available days in Bulgaria. Track your days carefully.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months beyond entry date). Print or save your return ticket, first night accommodation booking, and travel insurance policy. Download an eSIM or buy a local SIM at Sofia Airport arrivals hall.
2
Arrive at Bulgarian border control
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the 'All Passports' queue. Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly — they speak English at major entry points.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp says '90 days' or the date you must leave by. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it for your exit.
4
Exit Bulgaria before 90 days
Count your days from the entry stamp. You can leave earlier, but overstaying even one day can mean a fine or a ban. If you need longer, apply for a residence permit at the local migration office before your 90 days expire.

Frequently asked questions

No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or family visits only. You cannot take paid employment or start a business. For work, you need a work visa or residence permit arranged before travel.
No, the 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. You must leave Bulgaria (or the Schengen area) before 90 days. If you need to stay longer, apply for a long-stay visa at a Bulgarian embassy before you travel.
Overstaying even one day can result in a fine (typically 50–200 BGN), a ban from re-entering Bulgaria or the Schengen area for up to 1 year, and possible deportation. Always leave before your 90 days expire.
If you stay airside (don't pass through passport control) and your layover is under 24 hours, you don't need a visa. If you need to enter Bulgaria (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), the visa-free rules apply — you can enter for up to 90 days.
No, it's not required by law for visa-free travellers. But it's strongly recommended — medical costs in Bulgaria can be high, and your home insurance may not cover you abroad. A basic policy costs around €20–30 for a week.
No. Border officers strictly enforce the 6-month validity rule. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel. There are no exceptions.
Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Euros are widely accepted in tourist areas but at poor exchange rates. Bring some cash in BGN or use a fee-free ATM card. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants in cities.
