Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for an Iraqi eVisa at the official portal before departure. The eVisa is a single-entry permit, and processing times vary — apply at least two weeks ahead. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport to present at immigration.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Iraq. Iraqi immigration does not enforce a strict 6-month validity rule, but airlines may check for at least 6 months — confirm with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Baghdad and Erbil airports routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone ready to show.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Carry a hotel booking confirmation or an invitation letter from your host. While not always checked, having it ready avoids delays if an officer asks where you are staying.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Have a bank statement or credit card showing sufficient funds for your stay. Immigration rarely asks, but it can help if questioned about your ability to support yourself.Recommended
Apply Early
The eVisa can take up to 5 business days to process. Don't wait until the last minute — apply at least a week before your flight.
Keep Digital Copies
Save your eVisa PDF and travel documents on your phone. Internet access may be unreliable at some border points, so having offline copies is a lifesaver.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa
Go to the official Iraqi eVisa website (evisa.iq) and fill out the application. Upload a digital passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee online. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days.
2
Receive and Print Your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get the eVisa by email. Print a paper copy and also save the PDF on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and upon arrival in Iraq.
3
Prepare Your Documents for Arrival
At Baghdad International Airport (BGW) or other entry points, head to the immigration counter. Hand over your passport, printed eVisa, and return ticket. They may ask for your accommodation address. The process is straightforward if you have everything ready.
