Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Visa required — apply through North Korean authorities
North Korea requires a visa for all foreign visitors. You must apply through a North Korean embassy or consulate — there is no online eVisa system. Applications typically require an invitation from a North Korean travel agency or government body. Processing can take several weeks and approval is never guaranteed.North Korea gov portalRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in North Korea. There is no official 6-month validity requirement beyond your departure date, but airlines and immigration officers may still enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers in North Korea strictly require proof of a return or onward ticket. You will not be allowed to board your flight without one. Book a refundable ticket if your plans are uncertain.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
North Korean authorities expect you to have pre-booked accommodation through an approved tour operator. Carry a printed hotel confirmation or tour itinerary. Immigration may ask for this at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry enough cash (USD, EUR, or CNY) to cover your entire stay — credit cards and ATMs are not available for foreign visitors. There is no official minimum amount, but $100–$200 per day is a safe estimate for tours and expenses.Recommended
No independent travel allowed
You cannot enter North Korea without a pre-arranged guided tour. All movements are supervised by government guides. Book only through reputable operators.
Visa is a sticker in your passport
The visa is a physical sticker placed in your passport by the DPRK embassy. It is not an e-visa. Your passport will be sent to the embassy for processing.

What happens at the border

1
Choose an authorized tour operator
You must book a guided tour with a company approved by the DPRK government. They handle your visa application and itinerary. Popular operators include Koryo Tours and Young Pioneer Tours.
2
Submit visa application and documents
Your tour operator will send you a visa application form. Fill it out, provide a passport photo, and send a copy of your passport. The operator submits everything to the DPRK embassy in Beijing or another designated office.
3
Receive visa approval and travel to North Korea
Visa processing takes 2–4 weeks. Once approved, you'll get a visa sticker in your passport. You'll fly into Pyongyang Sunan International Airport (FNJ) from Beijing or Shenyang. At immigration, present your passport with the visa, and your tour guide will assist.
