Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in Panama. Panama does not require 6 months of remaining validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce their own rules — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Panama
Immigration officers at Tocumen International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket before granting entry. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight booking ready — they check this at the counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Immigration may ask for bank statements, credit cards, or cash to confirm you have at least $500 USD for your stay. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a sufficient limit works fine.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Panama requires 6 months of passport validity from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly. No exceptions.
Return ticket is almost always checked
Immigration officers at Tocumen Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a screenshot of your return flight or bus ticket ready on your phone. A flexible ticket works fine.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Tocumen International Airport (PTY)
Most travellers fly into Panama City's Tocumen Airport. Follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are separate queues for Panamanians and extranjeros (foreigners) — join the extranjeros line.
2
Present documents at immigration counter
Hand over your passport and the completed arrival form (if given on the plane). The officer will ask your purpose of visit and how long you're staying. Answer clearly. They may ask for your return ticket — have it ready on your phone.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date and the number of days granted (usually 90). Check the stamp before walking away. If the number is wrong, ask for correction immediately.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, go to baggage claim, then customs. Green lane for nothing to declare, red lane for goods over $500 or restricted items. Walk through and you're in Panama.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Panama (e.g., to Costa Rica or Colombia) and re-enter. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
Not if you're arriving directly from Taiwan. But if you've been in a country with yellow fever (e.g., Brazil, Colombia) within 90 days before arrival, you'll need proof of vaccination. Otherwise, no vaccine is required for Taiwanese passport holders.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Panamanian immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. There are no exceptions.
Yes, the Paso Canoas border crossing is open 24/7. You'll need the same documents: passport with 6+ months validity and a return ticket. The process is similar to the airport, but expect longer queues during peak hours.
No, Taiwanese passport holders do not pay a tourist card fee. Entry is completely free for stays up to 90 days.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined approximately $1 per day overstayed, and you may be barred from re-entering Panama for a period. Always leave on time or before.
The visa-free entry is for tourism only. Working remotely for a foreign company is generally tolerated for short stays, but officially you need a work permit. If you plan to stay longer and work, apply for the 'Short Stay Visa for Remote Workers' (Visa de Estancia Corta para Trabajadores Remotos) which allows up to 9 months.
