RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport or any land border. Pay $30 USD in cash for a single-entry visa valid for 30 days. Have a printed hotel booking and return ticket ready — the immigration officer may ask to see them before issuing the visa.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Original passport with at least 6 months validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure from Rwanda. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration at Kigali Airport routinely asks for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone. A flight itinerary without a ticket confirmation may not be accepted.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Rwanda. Immigration officers sometimes ask for this during the visa-on-arrival process, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked tour.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Have a bank statement showing at least $500 USD or carry cash equivalent. Immigration may ask how you plan to fund your stay — showing a credit card or cash is usually enough.Recommended
Cash is king at the visa counter
The credit card machine at the visa-on-arrival counter sometimes doesn't work. Bring $30 USD in cash (exact change) to avoid delays. ATMs are available after immigration, but you'll need the visa first.
Visa on arrival is single entry only
If you leave Rwanda (even for a day trip to Uganda or DR Congo), you'll need a new visa on return. The 30-day clock starts from the day you first enter.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kigali International Airport
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. There's a dedicated counter before the main passport control queue.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll receive a short form on arrival. Fill in your passport details, flight info, and accommodation address. Keep your passport and boarding pass handy.
3
Submit documents and pay the fee
Hand over your passport, completed form, return ticket, and accommodation proof. Pay $30 USD in cash or by card. The officer will process and issue the visa sticker.
4
Proceed to passport control
Once you have the visa sticker, join the main passport control queue. The officer will stamp you in. Total time: 10–20 minutes if no queue.

Frequently asked questions

The single-entry visa on arrival costs $30 USD for a 30-day stay. You can pay in cash (USD) or by credit card. If paying cash, bring exact change — the officer may not have change for large bills.
No, the visa on arrival is not extendable. If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a different visa type before travel (e.g., a visitor's visa through the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration).
Yes, if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Taiwan is not a risk country, but if you've traveled to an endemic area within 6 days before arrival, you'll need the vaccine certificate. Otherwise, it's not required for direct travel from Taiwan.
Yes, the visa on arrival is available at all official land border crossings, including the main ones from Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and DR Congo. The process and fee are the same as at the airport.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and refused entry by Rwandan immigration. Renew your passport before travel. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced.
No, there is no online pre-registration required for the visa on arrival. You fill out a paper form at the airport or border. However, you can apply for an e-visa in advance if you prefer — it costs the same and takes 3–5 business days.
It's not mandatory for entry, but it's strongly recommended. Medical care in Rwanda can be expensive — a hospital stay can cost $200–$500 per day. Insurance also covers trip cancellation and lost luggage.
