Tanzanian passport holders need a visa to enter Russia. You must apply for a visa at a Russian embassy or consulate before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa option for Tanzanian citizens. Plan ahead, as the process involves an invitation letter and several weeks of lead time.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Russian visaYou cannot get a visa on arrival or use an e-visa; you must visit a Russian diplomatic mission.
Apply at an embassy or consulate
Tanzanian passport holders must obtain a visa before traveling to Russia. You are not eligible for the Russian e-visa, so you must apply through the Russian embassy or consulate in your country of residence. Submit your application well in advance of your planned travel date.Required
Passport validityIf your passport expires sooner, you may be denied boarding or entry.
At least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of departure from Russia. Check the expiry date before you book anything.Required

At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for the visa and entry stamps. It is safer to have 2 blank pages in case of additional stamps.Required
Visa invitation letterThe invitation letter is a key document for the visa application process.
Required for visa application
To apply for a Russian visa, you will typically need an official invitation letter from a Russian host, hotel, or tour operator. This is a standard requirement for most visa categories.Required
Return or onward ticketThis proves you intend to leave Russia before your visa expires.
Proof of departure
You must have a confirmed return or onward ticket showing your departure from Russia. Border officials may ask to see it upon arrival.Required

You should be able to show evidence of sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay in Russia. This could be bank statements, traveler's checks, or a sponsor letter.Recommended
Travel insuranceMedical care can be expensive; insurance protects you.
Medical coverage recommended
It is strongly recommended to have travel medical insurance that covers medical expenses and emergencies in Russia. Some visa categories may require it.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou do not need to fill out any arrival form.
Not required
No arrival declaration is required for Tanzania passport holders entering Russia. Not required
No visa on arrival — don't risk it
Tanzanian passport holders cannot get a Russian visa at the airport or border. Arriving without a valid visa means immediate refusal of entry and being put on the next flight back at your own expense.
Start early — the process has multiple steps
Between the invitation letter, online form, embassy appointment, and processing time, you should allow at least 4–6 weeks from start to finish. Last-minute applications rarely work.
Visas are not extendable
Once in Russia, you cannot extend your visa. Overstaying even a day can lead to fines and a re-entry ban. Mark your departure date clearly and plan to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Get your invitation letter
Contact a Russian travel agency or hotel to arrange a tourist voucher, or have a Russian company issue a business invitation. This can take a few days to a couple of weeks. You'll need this before you can apply.
2
Fill out the online application
Go to visa.kdmid.ru, create an account, and complete the application form. Print the confirmation page with the barcode. Double-check all names and dates against your passport.
3
Book an appointment at the embassy
Schedule an appointment at the Russian Embassy in Dar es Salaam (or the nearest consulate if you're elsewhere). Appointments are often booked weeks in advance, so do this early.
4
Submit your documents in person
Bring your printed application, passport, photo, invitation letter, insurance, and fee payment to your appointment. The consular officer will review everything and may ask questions about your trip.
5
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 7–10 business days, but can stretch to 20 days. You'll be notified when your passport is ready for pickup. Track the status online if the embassy offers that.
6
Collect your passport with visa
Return to the embassy to pick up your passport with the visa sticker. Check the visa dates and entry/exit validity immediately — any errors must be corrected before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

No. Tanzanian citizens cannot get a visa on arrival. You must have a visa issued by a Russian embassy or consulate before you fly. Without it, you'll be denied boarding and entry.
Standard processing takes about 7–10 business days, but it can take up to 20 days during busy periods. Add time for getting the invitation letter and booking an appointment, so start at least a month before your planned travel.
It's a formal document from a Russian entity (like a hotel or tour operator) that confirms your purpose of visit. You can get a tourist voucher from a travel agency — many online services sell them for around $20–$50. For business visits, your Russian partner company issues it.
The consular fee varies by nationality and processing speed. For Tanzanian citizens, expect roughly $50–$150 USD. The exact amount is set by the Russian Embassy in Dar es Salaam — check their website or call before your appointment.
You must submit your application in person at the Russian Embassy in Dar es Salaam (or the consulate covering your area) because biometrics and an interview are required. A visa agency can help prepare documents, but you'll still need to appear for the appointment.
No. Russian visas are not extendable for Tanzanian citizens. You must leave before your visa expires. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a ban from re-entering Russia.
The fee is non-refundable. You can reapply, but you'll need to address the reason for rejection — often missing documents or an incorrect invitation. It's wise to double-check everything before submitting.
