Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival at Dakar Blaise Diagne International Airport
Tanzanian passport holders get a visa on arrival at Dakar's airport. Pay the fee in cash (EUR or XOF) — around €50–€80 depending on your stay. Have a printed copy of your hotel booking and return ticket ready at the visa counter.Required
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs at least one blank page for the visa sticker. Senegal does not formally require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines sometimes enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Senegal
Immigration officers at Dakar airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. A printed itinerary or a digital copy on your phone works. Without it, you may be denied boarding or entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Immigration may ask for it at the visa-on-arrival counter. A simple booking.com printout or an Airbnb receipt is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry enough cash (EUR or XOF) or have a bank statement showing you can cover your expenses. Officers rarely ask, but having €200–€300 in cash or a card with a recent statement avoids problems.Recommended
Cash is king at the border
ATMs at Dakar airport and land borders may not work or may charge high fees. Bring enough cash in XOF, euros, or USD to cover the visa fee and at least a day's expenses. Credit cards are not accepted for visa payments.
Yellow fever vaccine required
Senegal requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if you're arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. Tanzania is on the WHO risk list. Get the vaccine at least 10 days before travel and carry your yellow card.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport or border
At Dakar's Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS), follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. At land borders, go to the immigration office.
2

You'll get a short form to complete. It asks for basic info: name, passport number, flight details, accommodation address.
3
Submit documents and pay the fee
Hand over your passport, completed form, return ticket, and accommodation proof. Pay the visa fee in cash (XOF preferred).
4
Wait for processing
Processing usually takes 10–30 minutes. They'll stamp your passport with the visa on arrival.
5
Proceed to passport control
After getting the visa, go to the main passport control queue. Show your passport with the new visa and your boarding pass.

Frequently asked questions

The fee varies. Expect around 50,000–100,000 XOF (about $80–$160 USD). Bring cash in XOF, euros, or USD. ATMs at the airport may not work reliably.
The visa on arrival is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave and re-enter, or apply for a different visa type before travel.
Senegal requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if you're arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. Tanzania is considered a risk country, so you'll likely need the vaccine and a valid International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card). Check with your doctor before travel.
The visa on arrival is available at all official land border crossings. The process is the same: fill out a form, show your documents, pay the fee, and get the visa. Allow extra time as processing may be slower.
If you're transiting and not leaving the airport, you generally don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need the visa on arrival. Check with your airline for transit-specific rules.
You will likely be denied entry. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
