Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by law, but some airlines may ask for at least 3 months.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bosnia and Herzegovina
Immigration officers at Sarajevo Airport and land borders routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a clear digital version on your phone ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter of invitation from your host. Border officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have a bank statement, credit card, or cash (around €100–150 per day of stay) ready. Officers rarely ask, but it's a legal requirement for visa-free entry.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Border officers check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's shorter, you'll be turned away. Renew early if needed.
Keep your return ticket handy
Immigration may ask for proof of onward travel. A screenshot on your phone is fine — just have it ready to show.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), book your return/onward ticket, and save your accommodation confirmation on your phone. Print nothing unless you prefer paper.
2
Arrive at the border
At Sarajevo Airport, Mostar Airport, or any land border crossing, join the 'All Passports' queue. Hand over your passport. The officer will check your validity and may ask for your return ticket or accommodation. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the allowed stay (30 days). Count your days from that stamp. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when leaving.
4
Exit before day 30
Leave Bosnia and Herzegovina before your 30 days are up. Overstaying can lead to fines or a ban. If you need more time, you must apply for an extension at the local police station before your visa-free period ends.
