Ukrainian passport holders can travel to Hungary visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This covers tourism, business visits, and family visits. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry — border guards enforce this strictly.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Hungary. Hungary does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines sometimes enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Budapest Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a signed letter from your host with their address is enough. I've been asked for this at Budapest Airport twice in the last year.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Hungary can ask you to prove you have about 10,000 HUF (roughly €25) per day of your stay. A bank statement or cash in euros or forints works. They rarely check this for short visits, but have it handy.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Hungary. If it expires sooner, you will be denied boarding or entry. Renew your passport well in advance.
90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen area
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for all 27 Schengen countries combined, not just Hungary. If you spend 30 days in France and 60 in Hungary, that's your full allowance. Use the Schengen calculator online to track your days.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you queue
At Budapest Airport or any land border, have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. Keep them in a separate pocket or folder so you're not fumbling.
2
Join the non-EU passport queue
At Budapest Airport, follow signs for 'Non-Schengen' or 'All Passports'. The queue can be 20-40 minutes during peak hours. Don't join the EU line — you'll be sent back.
3
Hand over your passport and answer questions
The officer will check your passport validity, stamp it, and may ask: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'What's the purpose of your visit?'. Answer briefly and honestly. They rarely ask for additional documents unless something looks off.
4
Receive your entry stamp
You'll get a stamp in your passport with the date of entry. Check it's correct before walking away. The stamp marks the start of your 90-day visa-free period.

Frequently asked questions

No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, family visits, and short-term study (up to 90 days). You cannot take paid employment. For work, you need a work visa or residence permit, which must be arranged before you arrive.
You cannot extend the 90-day visa-free stay within Hungary or anywhere else in the Schengen area. You must leave for at least 90 days before returning. For longer stays (study, work, family reunification), apply for a national visa or residence permit at the Hungarian embassy in Kyiv or your local consulate before travel.
No, Ukrainian passport holders do not need a transit visa for Hungary. You can stay in the international transit zone of the airport without a visa. If you need to leave the airport (e.g., overnight layover), you'll need to enter visa-free under the standard 90-day rule.
Your passport (valid 6+ months), a return or onward ticket, and proof of first-night accommodation. Travel insurance is not mandatory but strongly recommended. Immigration rarely asks for bank statements, but having a credit card or some cash (€50-100 per day) is wise.
Yes, there are several land border crossings between Ukraine and Hungary, including at Chop (Záhony) and Beregsurány. The same visa-free rules apply. Expect longer queues during peak travel times. Have your documents ready for inspection.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may be fined, banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 3 years, or both. The fine varies but can be several hundred euros. Always track your days carefully — use a simple app or calendar.
Yes, Ukraine has a special status under the EU Temporary Protection Directive. This allows Ukrainians fleeing the war to stay in Hungary for up to 1 year (renewable) without a visa. This is separate from the standard 90-day visa-free travel. If you're seeking protection, apply at the immigration office (Országos Idegenrendészeti Főigazgatóság) in Budapest or at the border.
