Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your Iraqi host. Officers may ask for it during the visa-on-arrival process or at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show sufficient cash or card
Have at least $500 USD in cash or a credit card statement showing available funds. Immigration may ask to see proof you can cover your stay.Recommended
Security situation
Iraq has areas with active conflict and high security risks. Check your government's travel advisory before booking. Avoid non-essential travel to provinces like Anbar, Nineveh, and Salah al-Din.
Currency and cash
Iraq is largely cash-based. Bring USD in good condition (no tears or marks) to exchange for Iraqi dinars. Credit cards are rarely accepted outside major hotels in Baghdad.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to www.evisa.iq, fill in your details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee and wait for approval. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days.
2
Print or save your eVisa approval
Once approved, you'll receive a PDF. Print a copy and also save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and at Iraqi immigration.
3
Prepare your documents for the border
At Baghdad International Airport (BGW) or any other entry point, you'll go through immigration. Hand over your passport, eVisa, and return ticket. They may ask for your hotel address — have it ready.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs. There's usually no customs declaration for personal items.
