Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Slovakia. Schengen rules do not require 6 months beyond departure, but your airline may enforce it — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Bratislava airport and land borders routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host with their address and contact details ready to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Slovakia can ask for proof of at least €56 per day of stay. A bank statement or credit card with available limit works. Keep it accessible in case you get pulled aside.Recommended
90-day clock applies to all Schengen countries
Your 90 visa-free days are shared across all 27 Schengen countries. If you spend 30 days in France, then 60 in Slovakia, you've used up your 90 days. You cannot reset the clock by hopping to another Schengen country.
Borderless travel within Schengen
Once you enter Slovakia, you can travel freely to other Schengen countries (Germany, Austria, Czechia, etc.) without additional checks. Just keep your passport handy — random checks do happen, especially near borders.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you travel
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry). Book your return ticket and first night's accommodation. Print or save digital copies of everything — screenshots on your phone are usually accepted.
2
Arrive at a Schengen border checkpoint
You'll enter Slovakia through an airport (Bratislava, Košice, Poprad) or a land border from another Schengen country. At passport control, hand over your passport. The officer may ask about your trip purpose, length of stay, and where you're staying.
3
Present documents if asked
If the officer requests it, show your return ticket, accommodation booking, and proof of funds. Be polite and direct. They stamp your passport with the entry date — that starts your 90-day clock.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After the stamp, you're free to go. No additional forms or fees. Head to baggage claim and then customs (green channel for most travellers).

Frequently asked questions

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen visa-free limit. If you stay longer, you risk overstaying and getting banned.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, family visits, or short-term study. To work, you need a work permit and a long-stay visa (D-visa).
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or entry by Slovak border police. Renew your passport before you travel. The 6-month validity is a strict Schengen rule.
If you stay in a hotel, they register you automatically. If you stay with friends or family, your host must register you with the Foreign Police within 3 working days. If you're in a private rental, you need to do it yourself at the local police station.
No, you cannot extend a visa-free stay. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a long-stay visa (D-visa) at the Slovak embassy in Ukraine before you travel. Overstaying can result in a fine and a re-entry ban.
Your passport (original, not a copy). Police can ask for ID at any time. A digital copy of your passport on your phone is helpful but not a substitute for the original.
No, if you're transiting through a Slovak airport to a non-Schengen country, you don't need a visa as long as you stay in the international transit area. If you need to enter Slovakia (e.g., to switch airports), you need a Schengen visa or visa-free entry.
