Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Vanuatu. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Vanuatu
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at Port Vila and Santo airports. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight booking ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card showing you have enough funds for your stay — around 10,000 VUV per day (roughly $85 USD) is a safe benchmark. Officers almost never ask, but it's wise to have proof.Recommended
No visa needed — but documents matter
You don't need a visa, but immigration will check your passport validity and return ticket. Have both ready to avoid delays.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires within 6 months of your arrival date, you won't be allowed to fly.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Make sure your passport has 6+ months validity and at least one blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Print or save digital copies of everything.
2
Arrive at Bauerfield International Airport (VLI)
Most flights land at Port Vila's Bauerfield Airport. After disembarking, follow signs to the immigration hall. Queue at the 'Foreign Passports' counter.
3
Present documents to immigration officer
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (given on the plane), and return ticket if asked. The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in. No visa fee is charged.
4
Receive entry stamp and proceed
The officer will stamp your passport with a visitor permit valid for up to 120 days. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when leaving. Then collect your luggage and go through customs.
