Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Hong Kong. Hong Kong does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines sometimes enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Hong Kong
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. If you're flying out, have the booking confirmation ready — they'll check it at the counter and sometimes again at the gate.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Have a bank statement or credit card available. Hong Kong doesn't publish a minimum amount, but showing you have enough for your stay (hotel, food, transport) keeps things smooth.Recommended
Passport validity is strict
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Hong Kong. If it's even a day short, you will be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry at immigration. Check your passport expiry date well before you travel.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save screenshots of your return ticket, accommodation booking, and passport info page on your phone. Also email copies to yourself. If your phone dies or gets lost, you can still access them from any device.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)
Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Hong Kong residents and visitors. Join the 'Visitors' queue. Have your passport, return ticket (screenshot or printout), and accommodation confirmation ready.
2
Present documents to immigration officer
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly. They'll stamp your passport with a 30-day entry permit.
3
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to the baggage claim carousel for your flight, then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no restricted items. If you have goods to declare (e.g., large amounts of cash, tobacco, alcohol), use the red channel.
4
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you're free to leave. The Airport Express train, taxis, and buses are all clearly signposted from the arrivals hall.
