Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for an Azerbaijan eVisa at evisa.gov.az. The standard processing takes 3 business days ($25 USD), or you can pay $55 USD for urgent processing within 3 hours. Print the approved eVisa and carry it with your passport — immigration at Heydar Aliyev Airport will scan the barcode.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must have 6 months validity beyond your departure date from Azerbaijan
Your US passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your planned exit from Azerbaijan. Airlines at US departure gates check this strictly — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Baku airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready. Overstaying your eVisa's validity period results in a fine of 300 AZN (~$176 USD) per month.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Hotel booking confirmations or a letter of invitation from a host in Azerbaijan satisfy this requirement. Immigration rarely asks, but having a printed copy speeds up the process if questioned.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Carry at least $200 USD equivalent in cash or have a credit/debit card with available balance. Immigration may ask to see proof of sufficient funds for your stay, though this is not routinely enforced at Baku airport.Recommended
Apply early — no visas on arrival
There are no visas on arrival for US passport holders. You must have an approved eVisa before you board your flight to Azerbaijan. Apply at least a week before departure.
Keep your eVisa accessible
Print a paper copy of your eVisa and also save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at airline check-in and at immigration in Baku.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to evisa.gov.az, fill in your passport details, upload a photo, and pay the fee (around $20–$25 USD). Processing takes about 3 business days. You'll receive the visa by email.
2
Print or save your eVisa
Once approved, download the PDF. Print a paper copy and also save it on your phone. You'll show it at check-in and on arrival.
3
Arrive at Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD)
After landing in Baku, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports'. Join the queue for non-Azerbaijani citizens. Have your passport, eVisa, and return ticket ready. The officer may ask your hotel address — have it handy.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. The eVisa is valid for up to 30 days. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when you leave.
