Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay in Estonia
Your US passport needs to be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Estonia. Estonia follows Schengen rules — you can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across all Schengen countries, not just Estonia. Airlines at US departure gates will check your passport validity before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Tallinn Airport will ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air check this at check-in too. A bus or ferry ticket to a non-Schengen country (like Russia or the UK) also counts.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host in Estonia ready. Booking.com or Airbnb confirmations work fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Estonia can ask for proof you have enough money for your trip. The official guideline is about €100 per day of stay. A credit card statement or cash in euros works. I've never been asked, but a friend was pulled aside at Tallinn and had to show his bank app.Recommended
Schengen 90/180-day rule applies
Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all 27 Schengen countries. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or any other Schengen state in the past 180 days, that time counts toward your 90-day limit in Estonia. Keep track using the Schengen calculator on the EU website.
Travel insurance is cheap insurance
A basic travel insurance policy costs around $30–50 for a week. Without it, a single emergency room visit or hospital stay can cost hundreds of euros. Get it before you go.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save all confirmations as screenshots or PDFs on your phone. Arrange travel insurance and a local SIM/eSIM if you want.
2
Arrive at Tallinn Airport or a land border
Most US travelers fly into Tallinn Airport (TLL). Follow signs to 'Passport Control' — it's a short walk from the arrivals gate. At land borders (e.g., from Latvia or by ferry from Helsinki), you'll go through Schengen border checks.
3
Present your passport at the border officer booth
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, how long you're staying, where you're staying, and your return ticket. Answer clearly and briefly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no goods to declare. You're now in Estonia.
