Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Visa on arrival
Apply for an Ethiopian eVisa at the official portal before travel. The eVisa costs around $52 USD for a single-entry 30-day visa and is processed within 3 business days. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport — immigration at Addis Ababa Bole Airport will stamp you in on arrival.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Ethiopia. Airlines at US departure gates check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before booking.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Bole Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready. A one-way ticket without onward proof can get you denied boarding at your departure airport.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Carry a hotel booking confirmation or an invitation letter from your host in Ethiopia. Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-arranged tour or hotel. A simple printout of your first night's booking covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Have access to at least $200–$300 USD in cash or a credit card for your stay. Ethiopia has a cash-based economy for many expenses, and ATMs in Addis can be unreliable. Immigration rarely asks, but carrying USD cash is practical for visa fees and airport transfers.Recommended
Cash only for visa on arrival
The visa on arrival counter only accepts cash — USD, EUR, or GBP. No credit cards, no Ethiopian birr. Have the exact amount ready to avoid delays. ATMs are available after immigration, but not before.
E-visa alternative
If you want to skip the queue, apply for an e-visa online at www.evisa.gov.et before you fly. It costs about the same ($52 USD) and is processed in 3 days. Print the approval and show it at immigration. Note: e-visa only works for Addis Ababa airport entry.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. The counter is before passport control. Join the queue for visa on arrival.
2
Submit documents and pay
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (given on the plane), and passport photo if you have one. Pay the visa fee in cash (USD, EUR, or GBP). The officer will process your visa.
3
Receive visa and proceed to passport control
Once the visa sticker is placed in your passport, go to the passport control queue. The officer will stamp you in. You're now legally in Ethiopia.
4
Collect luggage and exit
Proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's a green channel for nothing to declare and a red channel for goods over $500 USD. Exit into the arrivals hall.
