Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Pakistan eVisa at visa.nadra.gov.pk at least 7–10 days before departure. The system issues tourist, business, and student visas — processing takes 3–5 working days. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your US passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Pakistan. Pakistan does not enforce a 6-month validity rule, but airlines may ask for it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket. Without one, you may be denied boarding or entry. Book a refundable ticket if your plans are flexible.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Hotel booking confirmations or a letter of invitation from your host in Pakistan can speed up immigration. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your stay. Immigration rarely checks, but you may need to show funds if you look under-prepared.Recommended
No visa-on-arrival for US citizens
Despite some online rumors, US passport holders cannot get a visa at the airport. You must have an approved visa before you board your flight. Airlines will check this at check-in.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save PDFs of your visa, passport, and travel insurance on your phone and in cloud storage. If you lose your passport, these copies make replacement much faster.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your visa online
Go to the official Pakistan visa portal (visa.nadra.gov.pk) and fill out the application. Upload a digital passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee online. Processing takes 5–15 business days.
2
Receive your visa approval
Once approved, you'll get an email with a visa sticker or an electronic visa (e-visa). Print a copy and save a PDF on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and on arrival.
3
Pack your documents
Before you leave, gather: passport, printed visa, return ticket, hotel booking, travel insurance card, and a pen for the arrival card. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at a Pakistani airport
At Islamabad, Karachi, or Lahore airports, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' immigration. Present your passport, visa, and arrival card. An officer may ask about your itinerary — answer clearly. You'll get a stamp allowing up to 30 days (or as per your visa).
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. You may pass through customs — declare any expensive electronics or large amounts of cash. Then exit into the arrivals hall.

Your visa application will be rejected. Renew your passport first, then apply. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced.
Yes, you can apply for an extension at the Directorate of Immigration in Islamabad or at provincial immigration offices. Extensions are granted on a case-by-case basis and may cost around $30–$50. Start the process at least a week before your visa expires.
