RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Senegal. Airlines check this before boarding, so verify your passport's expiration date before heading to the airport.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Senegal
Immigration officers at Dakar Blaise Diagne International Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready to show.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. While not always checked, having it ready avoids delays at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Evidence of sufficient money for your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your expenses in Senegal. Immigration may ask for this if you look like you're traveling on a tight budget.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Senegal requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied travel.
No visa, no fee — but have proof of onward travel
US passport holders enter visa-free for up to 90 days. No visa application or fee is needed. However, immigration may ask for a return or onward ticket, so keep a copy handy.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'. There are usually two lines: one for Senegalese/ECOWAS nationals and one for all other passports. Join the 'All Other Passports' line.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and boarding pass. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and how long you're staying. Have your return ticket and hotel booking ready on your phone or printed.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a date. Check that the stamp is legible and the date is correct before stepping away. You're now allowed to stay up to 90 days.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to baggage claim. Customs is usually a green/red channel system. If you have nothing to declare, walk through the green channel.

The currency is the West African CFA franc (XOF). There is no mandatory cash declaration for amounts under 1,000,000 XOF (about $1,600 USD). For larger amounts, you should declare at customs to avoid seizure.
