Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply for a visa sticker before travel
You need a visa sticker from a Suriname embassy or consulate before you fly. Apply at the nearest Suriname diplomatic mission — there is no eVisa or visa on arrival for US passport holders. Processing takes 2–4 weeks, so start early.Visa infoRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure from Suriname. Carry a copy of the bio page — immigration at Johan Adolf Pengel Airport sometimes asks for it.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. A flight booking out of Suriname within your visa validity works — they rarely check the actual date, just that you have one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed hotel reservation or a letter from your host ready. Immigration at Paramaribo sometimes asks where you are staying — a simple booking confirmation is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have at least $500 USD available. Officers rarely check, but if they do, a recent statement from your bank works fine.Recommended
Apply early — no last-minute option
There is no visa on arrival for US citizens. If you show up at the airport without an approved visa, you won't be allowed to board. Apply at least 3 weeks before your flight.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for 6 months from the day you land in Suriname, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew it before you apply.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the visa online
Go to the Suriname eVisa website (or the embassy portal if you prefer a sticker visa). Fill in the form, upload a passport photo and your passport scan, pay the fee, and submit. Processing usually takes 5–10 business days, sometimes longer.
2
Wait for approval
You'll get an email when your visa is approved. Print the approval letter or save it on your phone. The visa is usually valid for 90 days from issue, allowing a single entry.
3
Fly to Suriname
Most US travelers fly into Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (PBM) near Paramaribo. At check-in, show your visa approval and onward ticket. On arrival, go to the immigration queue — have your passport, visa approval, and return ticket ready.
4
Go through immigration
The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry (unless your visa says otherwise). They may ask where you're staying and how long you plan to stay. Answer clearly. That's it — you're in.

Frequently asked questions

Typically 5–10 business days, but it can take up to 3 weeks during busy periods. Apply at least 3 weeks before your trip to be safe.
No. US passport holders must get a visa before traveling. There is no visa-on-arrival option at the airport or land borders.
The eVisa fee is around $40–$60 USD depending on the current exchange rate. Check the official eVisa site for the exact amount before paying.
If you're arriving from a country with yellow fever (or have been there in the last 6 months), you need proof of vaccination. Coming directly from the US, you don't need it. But check the latest requirements before you go.
Extensions are possible but not guaranteed. You'll need to visit the Immigration Office in Paramaribo before your 90 days expire. The process can take a few days and costs around $50–$100. Start early.
You'll get a rejection email with a reason (often incomplete documents or a passport issue). You can reapply, but you'll need to fix the problem first. There's no appeal process.
It's not a formal requirement, but immigration officers may ask how you'll support yourself. Having a credit card or a bank statement on your phone is enough.
