Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Ukraine. Ukraine does not enforce the 6-month validity rule for US citizens — just make sure it doesn't expire before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ukraine
Immigration officers at Boryspil and Lviv airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within 90 days.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and contact number. Border officers occasionally ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Ukraine doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but around $50 per day is a safe benchmark if asked.Recommended
Ukraine is an active war zone
The U.S. State Department advises against all travel to Ukraine due to the ongoing war with Russia. If you do travel, register with the U.S. embassy in Kyiv, have a contingency plan, and ensure your insurance covers war-related incidents.
eSIMs save time at the airport
Instead of queuing for a local SIM at the airport, install an Airalo eSIM before you fly. It activates automatically when you land, so you have data immediately for maps, translation, and ride-hailing apps.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), book your return/onward ticket, and save your accommodation confirmation and insurance details on your phone.
2
Arrive at the border
At any Ukrainian airport (Kyiv Boryspil, Lviv, Odesa) or land border crossing, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
3
Present your passport
Hand over your US passport. The officer will check your photo, validity, and may ask about your trip purpose, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer honestly and briefly.
4
Receive your entry stamp
If everything's in order, you'll get an entry stamp with the date. That stamp marks your 90-day visa-free allowance. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it to leave.
5
Exit procedure
When leaving Ukraine, go through passport control again. They'll check you haven't overstayed. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
